So I was giving Abby a bath and I felt this power come over me which caused me to fall to the floor. It was if I heard a deep voice with the words “IIII caaaan seeeee youuuuuu.” I regained some of my strength to check on Abby and this is what I saw: a re-creation of Mordor!! I knew she was getting all her energy from somewhere...a conduit to Middle Earth???

Family Photos
My sister got a sweet new camera and was kind enough to use it on us to get a few family photos. We didn't get them done in time for the Christmas card, but I thought they turned out so well that I wanted to show them off somehow! We went up Millcreek Canyon to get some nice scenery, but it was pretty cold...hence, the red noses and cheeks! Here's a few of my favorites...
Thanks Jac!!!

Finally!!
Let's just start off by saying that this has been the house project from you know where. Hence, its completion is worth sharing. One of the many reasons why we haven't worked in our basement much is because I've wanted to get bigger windows in the bedrooms, mainly for safety reasons. I am ultra-paranoid, and I'll freely admit it, but I simply didn't want my children sleeping in a room where they could be trapped in a fire or some other emergency. We had all the other windows in the basement replaced earlier this year, but have had these last two windows hanging over our heads for too long. We found out how much we needed to dig out for egress windows and started digging. Enter Nightmare #1. Our dirt didn't have rocks in it, but it might as well have for as rock-hard as it was. Since I'm usually the picture-taker, there's no pictures of me digging, but trust me, I did A LOT of digging. And many times I felt like I was digging my own grave. We had to break up the dirt with a pick-axe first before we could shovel it. So it took us a good two months to dig the holes we needed. And I have a much greater appreciation for those who do manual labor.
Pretty deep hole, right?! We had to dig an extra foot so we could just leave the slab in concrete in the hole rather than pay too much money to get it hauled away. Getting the holes dug was HUGE, so I was really excited to call the people to cut the concrete. They showed up at 7:15am (sorry neighbors) and had the concrete cut for both windows in about two hours. Nice work guys! That was one check I was happy to write, because we didn't have to do the work!!
Later that day our window guy came to install the new windows. Again, lovely work. Especially because someone else did everything. We thought we had the measurements all good so the window would just swing open, but we were off a bit and the window hit the siding and wouldn't open all the way. That was just a Bad Dream though as we just had to notch the siding a bit to clear the way.
So then I ordered a couple of window wells and had them delivered. I figured the really hard part of the job was done and putting dirt back in the hole would be a lot easier than taking it out. I was somewhat right. We put the window wells into the holes we had dug and found a bit of a problem...we couldn't put the well right up to the house foundation and still be able to open the windows all the way (they are casement windows, and the whole thing swings open). Bring on Nightmare #2. Trying to position those suckers so they were as close as they could be, but far enough away so the windows could open was not easy. We spent hours trying to get them both just right. Eventually we did, and we figured that we'd just find something to cover up the dirt that was still exposed next to the house.
Well, in trying to figure out the best possible solution, I called our window guy to give us some ideas. He came over to look at the problem and said to me, "What size of window wells did you get?" I said, "36 inch ones. The ones you told me to get." "Ummm, I hate to tell you, but those aren't 36 inch window wells. Those are 24 inches." NIGHTMARE #3. The stupid window well people delivered the WRONG SIZE. And stupid me didn't measure them before we installed them. I was almost in tears at that point, but had enough anger to call the window well people to tell them the problem. They were very apologetic and had the window wells I paid for at our house in an hour. And we just got two free window wells, as they let us keep the original ones they brought. Maybe when I get over all of this I'll start digging again and we can actually use them on some of our other basement windows. Someday.
Sooo...the 4th and final Nightmare was having to dig out and remove the wrong size window wells and install the right ones. Thankfully I have wonderful family members who came over to help, so that project took less time than I thought it would. We had spent so much time and money on this project that we figured we had to do it right. The correct size window wells look awesome, and we can open the windows without a problem!!

More California Fun
I was very bad at taking pictures after Disneyland, but we had a great few days in California! The air finally cleared a bit the last couple of days we were there, so it was actually nice to go outside. Here's a funny video of Abby enjoying the slide at Jim and Suzy's.
It's always nice for us to visit with family while we're there. We certainly have wonderful hosts!!
Thanks for everything Grandma Jackie and Grandpa Bruce!!

Disneyland!!
We have been lucky enough to spend part of this last week in California. We have been unlucky enough to plan our trip just in time for most of Southern California to go up in flames. But, luckily, Disneyland seems to have a bubble over it and we enjoyed a lovely day there with relatively smoke-free air!
David's parents were kind enough to take care of Abby the first half of the day so we could ride the big rides without carting her around. It was great. We lucked out on three major rides as they would close the ride temporarily, and we would just happen to get in line right after the ride reopened. We'd pretty much walk right up to the front and then see an enormous line when we got out. It was awesome! We hit everything we wanted to, with time to spare. So we decided to splurge and buy a $3 churro. It was worth it!
When Abby finally arrived, she was so happy to be there!!
We took her to the Disney Princess Fantasy Faire, but didn't wait in line to see the princesses. She doesn't care that much. We just got the free crown and posed a bit...
Here we are in front of Sleeping Beauty's Castle...
She loved the Jungle Cruise. Our guide was quite funny, so we fully enjoyed that ride too!
And we hit Toon Town, although Abby was a little annoyed she couldn't actually pick up the things in Mickey and Minnie's houses.

The Big Hole
I've wanted to go to Bingham Copper Mine for years and have never been. One of the reasons I never went is because I've always wanted to go with my grandpa, who worked there during his college years. I wanted to get an insider's perspective, even if it has been 50 years! And we finally went! My grandpa took me, my sister, and the kids for a little field trip last week. It is a pretty amazing sight. They have a nice visitor's center where you can see the progression of the mine since 1900. As they continue to dig deeper, they also have to dig out so the hole doesn't collapse on itself. Hence, the largest man-made pit on earth!
Just as I knew it would be, it was very cool to get my grandpa's perspective. The job he worked is now obsolete as machinery and technology has improved, but there are still a lot of things that haven't changed in the mining process. It is quite the operation.
And here's the famous giant tire. These tires go on the trucks that haul the dirt from the mine to the seven-mile-long conveyor belt. They are over 12 1/2 feet tall, cost $25,000, and last for only a year. And there's six tires per truck. It's a good thing they're mining gold and silver along with copper in that mine!

Go Utes!
Grandma and Grandpa's Backyard
Grandma and Grandpa's house is always a party, and we enjoyed one of the last hot summer days in their pool. With the ban of kids 5 and under from public pools because of the parasite going around, we are especially grateful we've had a place to cool off all summer...free of charge and parasites!!

Here's Abby's cousins, Zachy and Max, saving her from floating away to the other side of the pool.
The pool was just a bit on the chilly side, so all the kids had to spend some time in the hot tub to warm up. I think Abby and Caroline would have stayed in there all day if we'd let them!

Enjoying the Beauties of Utah
We did a couple of fun things this last week. My sisters and I took the kids to This Is the Place Heritage Park to try and get in touch with our pioneer ancestry. It's been a long time since I've been there, but I really was amazed by how much there is to do! We had a great time! It was hot, as usual, so we didn't stay all day, but we definitely could have. I think the kids' favorite place was this Pioneer Playground. There are a few houses, a store, a firehouse, a train, and obviously a teepee...all in miniature kid size!

The coolest part of this playground was that all of the little houses were furnished (with babies, furniture, food, etc.). The kids would have played here all day if we'd let them!
There was also a little petting corral, complete with pony rides. And I finally discovered what my fearless child is a little timid about...baby animals. It's odd, really. She's not afraid of a dog bigger than her licking her face, but she would not get too close to a baby goat just sitting there minding its own business. We tried to give her a ride on a pony, but if you look closely you can see how unhappy she is to be there...
And this is as close as she'd get to the baby goat...
We also had the chance to go up to Alta last weekend for a family party (I have family who have a cabin up there). Albion Basin is beautiful in the summertime. We unfortunately missed the peak of the wildflowers, but the cooler temperatures were heavenly! We had to stop Abby a couple of times from running off a cliff (again, the fearless thing...), but she had a great time playing on the ski lift, watching the campfire, and of course, playing with the rocks!!
